A breast reduction, in contrast to a mastopexy procedure, is typically performed for relief of physical or medical problems that are caused by the weight of one’s excessively large breasts. Back and neck pain, breathing problems, and skin rashes are some of the medical conditions that are frequently associated with large breasts. Many women who need this plastic surgery procedure feel an extreme sense of self consciousness secondary to the large size of their breasts. Reduction mammoplasty, usually referred to as breast reduction surgery, is designed to alleviate these issues. The procedure involves the removal of fat, skin, and breast tissue from the breasts thereby creating a lighter, smaller, and firmer structure. Also, if the size of the areola is excessive, this may be corrected during the procedure.
Depending on the size of a woman’s breasts, the desired post-operative size and the technique used, a breast reduction procedure may take anywhere from two to five hours. Breast reduction is performed in office-based ambulatory facilities or in a hospital setting. There are some insurance companies that require a minimum volume of tissue to be removed to cover the surgery. This should be pre-determined by your cosmetic surgeon and a letter of pre-determination sent to your insurance carrier along with photographs of your condition to demonstrate the necessity for reduction mammoplasty. There are various techniques available to alleviate the problem which will likely be discussed with you when you meet your plastic surgeon. The most often performed technique involves an inverted T-shaped incision similar to the most common incision used in breast lift surgery. There are several new techniques that are available, but most of these techniques don’t apply to many patients.
If your breasts are pendulous and excessively large it may require removal of the nipple areola complex and replacement of these structures as free grafts. Your cosmetic surgeon will let you know if this is the best technique for your situation and should apprise you of the benefits and risks of this specific technique. In the majority of situations however, the nipple areola complex is left attached to the blood supply and underlying skin. Your cosmetic surgeon should also explain the possible changes in sensation to the nipple areola complex that can occur with reduction mammoplasty. Lipoplasty can be added to the surgery for removal of fat primarily at the outer portions of the breast.
After the surgery has been performed, you may have surgical drains which will typically remain in place for around 24 hours. The use of these drains is a matter of your cosmetic surgeon’s preferences and what he or she has found throughout the procedure. Your breasts will likely be bandaged in an elastic wrap or in a surgical bra. These dressings are usually changed a few days after the surgery and when the stitches are ready to begin being removed. This will take place roughly one week after the surgery.

Breast aesthetics is in reference to the improvement of breast shape. Many cosmetic surgery centers excel in surgical breast enlargement through the use of surgery and implants. Augmentation mammoplasty is often a plastic surgery center’s most popular procedure. Many of these centers have offered a line of implants the provide a wide selection of both FDA approved silicone gel and saline implants. Breast implants can also be used with breast lift surgery, breast reduction surgery, and some reconstructive procedures to help improve a woman’s breast shape. Most cosmetic surgeons have extensive experience with each of these. They average between 300 and 500 breast procedures each year. Their expertise is in a very high demand by both patients who travel and those who are local patients.
Augmentation mammoplasty is the number one procedure that is performed at many cosmetic surgery centers. Many cosmetic surgeons have an extensive training in all approaches for this surgery, including belly button, nipple, crease, and underarm. Cosmetic surgeons have the most comprehensive line of both saline and silicone breast implants. Every person may choose between silicone, saline, smooth, textured, round, teardrop, cohesive gel, and the new gummy bear implants. The patients of cosmetic surgeons usually return to their normal activities within 48 hours with no special massage, exercises, or bras. Some of these cosmetic surgeons have trained specifically in augmentation mammoplasty procedures and there are a few who are nationally recognized in breast augmentation. Their training and experience will allow for them to offer the best breast implant options that are available.
Mastopexy or breast lift surgery involves reshaping and raising sagging breasts. The breast lift technique that a patient’s surgeon chooses for them will depend on the position of the nipple with respect to the crease of the breast. The most common lift is a minimal circumareolar breast lift, which will involve a incision around a person’s areola. The mastopexy may be performed in conjunction with breast implants or alone. For mothers who have children, the combination of a breast lift with implants can result in a more youthful shape of breasts. Most women who choose to receive the procedure will select cohesive gel implants, saline implants, or gummy bear form stable silicone gel. Some cosmetic surgery centers are an FDA co-investigator for the new form of stable gummy bear cohesive silicone gel implants.
A breast reduction surgery is capable of decreasing the shape and size of the breasts be removing excessive tissue. A breast reduction procedure is very similar to a breast lift in that it typically involves a breast lift with removal of enough excess breast tissue to make a woman’s breasts smaller.
Some plastic surgeons have also received a specialized training for breast reconstruction. Many of these surgeons have performed several hundred of these reconstructions over the past decade. The most common method of breast reconstruction surgery is one or two stages of tissue expanding and reconstruction with implants. Most of these surgeons will also provide their patients with the choice of a latissimus muscle flap and a sparing TRAM flap.
