There Are Many Kinds Of Incisions For Breast Implants

A breast implant procedure is usually performed in a state of the art outpatient facility under general anesthesia and most often take approximately one and a half hours to perform. In the holding area prior to surgery, the patient’s “before” pictures are taken and then the breasts are marked. After speaking with the anesthetist/anesthesiologist, the patient is brought to the operating room. After he or she is asleep, local nerve blocks combined with a medication that shrinks blood vessels and capillaries to reduce any bleeding are instilled.

Next, the incisions are made and the “pockets” created – generally under the pectoralis muscle – and the implants are placed. Saline implants are inserted into the “pockets” while empty and then filled after in position. An antibiotic solution is generally added to the saline which some studies suggest reduces the incidence of capsular contracture (firmness and hardening of the healing tissue around the implant). Cohesive silicone gel implants are pre-filled and require a slightly larger incision to be placed. The operating room table back is elevated to place the patient in a sitting position to check implant position and symmetry.

Minor adjustments are made to the implant “pockets” as necessary to obtain the best possible results and symmetry. After the table back is lowered, a long acting anesthetic is placed into the “pockets” which greatly reduces postoperative discomfort. The incisions are closed with sutures predominantly below the surface of the skin to avoid cross-hatching suture marks and optimize the chances for the finest scars. Steri-strips are applied as well as being placed in a post surgical bra.

Every patient will be given the proper instructions on how to deal with their new breasts in order to achieve optimal results. This will include many things such as exercises to do each morning to ensure that breast implants stay in place.

Most plastic surgeons and patients agree that the new cohesive silicone gel implants have a more natural feel and are less likely to produce rippling than saline implants. The cohesive gel implant, however will require a slightly larger incision to allow placement.

There are several different locations for incision placement. An infra-mammary incision is placed in or near the crease under the breast. An areolar incision is placed in the border of the lower part of the areola (pigmented area around the nipple). An axillary incision is placed in a natural crease in the hair bearing skin of the armpit. The trans-umbilical incision is in the upper aspect of the “belly button” and is for saline implants only. Most plastic surgeons generally prefer the areolar incision because of the excellent quality of the scars which are generally imperceptible. However, the final choice of incision placement will ultimately be up to the patient.

Taxation On Plastic Surgery – Is It Justifiable?

Breast augmentation and for that matter plastic surgery taxation is on the platform of healthcare issues in 2009. I guess someone has to help the government find a way to make up for all of the printed money.. why not you. The goal of the taxation for cosmetic, plastic or elective surgery is to assist in providing healthcare coverage to people that cannot afford coverage on their own. Using breast enhancement as an example, let?s take a closer look at what the outcome of taxation could yield.

Knowing that breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure and may range in cost from $4,000.00 to $10,000, let?s consider the number of women that have had breast enhancement and the yield in dollars had taxes been levied on the procedure. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 800,000 women in the U.S. selected the enlargement procedure in the past three years. If only 25% of the women that had breast augmentation purchased the procedure at the rate of $4000, the yield would bring millions of tax dollars available to help fund the uninsured. And the numbers only reflect an estimated 25% of breast augmentation procedures performed in the past three years.

Consider the numbers when we account for all enlargement procedures or, for that matter, all cosmetic surgery procedures. That includes not on cosmetic and cosmetic surgery procedures but non-surgical procedures as well including Botox, dermal fillers and facial injections. The impact could be startling. Also keep in mind that the people that are getting plastic surgery are not all rich and famous. This tax cuts into the middle class as well as the upper class. It affects all who are interested in having something extra done. This actually may deter those who are considering it. An extra $400 or so may cause the surgery to be too expensive to purchase. But, why would we want to support such taxation on plastic surgery?
Some may feel that taxation on cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation using breast implants, liposuction, or rhinoplasty is a measure of good will.

Others may justify the taxation because the elective procedures like breast augmentation use breast implants or other technology, and therefore should be taxed. Still others may be against the taxation. They may contend that taxation could significantly harm a highly successful industry that sets a bar for high quality care. From the comforting ambiance to the time the cosmetic or cosmetic surgeon spends in consultation and in surgical care, plastic surgeons are able to stand above many other types of medical specialists because their services are not governed by external forces. We will not know for some time what the verdict will be. Though, we still know that plastic surgeons stand behind quality services. Even if taxation does come to fruition, the enhancement is life through plastic surgery is truly fulfilling. Breast augmentation using breast implants will certainly continue to be a popular plastic surgery procedure.
