Now is the most excellent time in history to be a movie connoisseur. It used to be that the single means you could see a fantastic film was to visit the theater. Afterward video stores came on the scene but you had to go over there and many times the movies were out of stock. You also needed to worry about getting the motion picture back to the store in a timely manner or you had to pay a late fee. Even now when you can get movies in the mail, you still have to wait.
Basic – While things go awry throughout an armed forces work out, base captain Daly brings in Travolta, the best interrogator he ever had, to question the surviving members of the squad, whose stories do not add up. Essentially a whodunit, this motion picture keeps us guessing, as a good plot should. Cast includes John Travolta, Connie Nielsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Daly, Roselyn Sanchez, and Harry Connick. (2003 minutes, 1995)
Clue – Silly and insipid mystery based on the popular board game of the same name with all the recognizable characters Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Red, et al. assembled for a murderous day in a Victorian mansion. Everyone tries extremely hard but there is nothing they can do to save this weak film. Cast includes Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Ponder, and Howard Hesseman. (87 minutes, 1985)
The Night of the Iguana – Trudging story based on Tennessee Williams play. Recovered alcoholic clergyman Burton, a bus-journey guide in Mexico, becomes involved with Kerr, Gardner, and Lyon. Dorothy Jeakins won an Oscar for her costumes. Cast includes Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Ava Gardner, Sue Lyon, Skip Ward, Grayson Chamber, and Cyril Delevanti. (118 minutes, 1964)
Like Water for Chocolate – Striking and sumptuous film from a book by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century – a youthful girl’s life is conditioned by her serious and uncompromising mom, who treats her terribly. Spectacular tale, not without humor, with an admirable cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes, 1992)
Far and Away – A scrappy Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the comparably spirited daughter of a prosperous landowner, and together they travel to America to search for their final fate in the 1893 Oklahoma land rush. Outstanding platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both good-looking and involving; the dilemma is a severe lack of decent dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes, 1992)
The Indian in the Cupboard – A boy (Scardino) receives an ancient chest as a birthday present, and finds out that when he sets a toy Indian inside and turns the key, the Indian comes to life. Then he sees that the Indian is not a toy, but a real human being. Troubles follow, particularly while his best playmate brings to life a toy cowboy. Cast includes Hal Scardino, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, Rishi Bhat, and Nestor Serrano. (96 minutes, 1995)
